Decorilla-Designer im Fokus – Decorilla Interior Design Online

What makes a home feel both cared for and lived in? For Decorilla designers, it starts with how people live, not just how things look. Today’s spotlight presents Federica Piras and her warm interiors where comfort becomes a kind of quiet order.

Federica’s approach to creating elegant interiors is inspired by years spent between Brazil and Paris, where she learned how restraint can coexist with a distinctive soul. His style exudes a nuanced sensitivity shaped by the mentorship of Arthur Casas, as well as a deep appreciation of timeless craftsmanship.
As one of Decorilla’s preeminent interior designers, Federica constructs each project with her unique instinct for experienced imperfections. It involves natural materials, clean lines, modern features and a few well-chosen vintage pieces that anchor the memory in the present. But that’s not all: Federica also designs her own furniture.

Have you always been interested in interior design?
Yes, interior design has always interested me, but more generally, I like to be creative. I have always loved creating spaces that are warm and comfortable, but also well organized and functional. As I love spending time at home, I wanted to design environments, both for myself and my friends, that were truly welcoming and comfortable, where people felt relaxed and at ease.

How would you define your design style?
I always start by listening to my clients’ preferences, while gently guiding them with my own tastes and expertise. Everyone has different opinions, and understanding this is key to creating a space that truly works for them. My style leans toward warm, welcoming environments with clean, modern lines and natural materials. I like to incorporate antique pieces to add character and warmth, creating a balanced mix that feels lived in rather than like a showroom. I generally work with warm, light neutral tones and sometimes add subtle pops of color, but I always tailor the design to the client’s specific home and lifestyle.

Who or what influences your work?
My work is deeply influenced by my time in Brazil, which was incredibly inspiring. Work with Arthur Casaswho I consider one of my greatest mentors, has shaped much of my approach to design. I also draw a lot from my stay in Paris, where I developed a strong passion for old and timeless pieces. Both experiences helped me blend modern and classic elements in an authentic and meaningful way.

What is the essential element that you include in your interior decoration?
A must-have in my interior designs is a touch of personality, like a unique vintage piece, a custom-made item, a piece related to their hobby or passion, or a wall of travel photos; it’s these details that make a space feel like it truly belongs to them.
What’s a recent design trend that you’re loving right now?
Although there have been many trends, I really like curved sofas and organically shaped furniture. They bring softness and flow to a space that is both modern and welcoming, adding a natural elegance that balances well with clean lines.

If you had to choose a favorite room in your home, what would it be and why?
My favorite room is definitely the kitchen; this is where all the magic happens. It’s not just a place to cook, but a space to gather, connect and create memories. Plus, with so many materials, color palettes and styles to play with, the kitchen offers endless opportunities to use your creativity.
What is your favorite design magazine or blog and why?
I would say Architectural Digest for its timeless elegance and storytelling, and Leibal for its emphasis on minimalism and thoughtful design. Leibal particularly touches me because it highlights spaces where simplicity and functionality combine wonderfully.

What is the best thing about being an interior designer?
One of the best things about being an interior designer is that inspiration can come from anywhere, from traveling, exploring new cultures, architecture or even a small cafe in another country. It’s a profession that opens your eyes to the beauty around the world, then allows you to bring that inspiration back into the spaces you create.

What was your first big project and what was your favorite part?
My first big project was a high-end apartment in Paris, in the chic Saint-Germain-des-Prés district. It was a two bedroom, two bathroom space, and my favorite part was definitely the styling and installation phase. When all the pieces arrive, there are almost always changes from the original plan, and that’s actually the best part. Moving the furniture, changing the table lamps from one console to another, changing the rug, it is during this phase that everything comes together and the design really takes shape.

How do you handle challenges that arise during a design project?
Communication is key. I make it a priority to maintain an open, honest and frequent dialogue with customers, contractors and suppliers. By understanding each other’s perspective and sharing regular updates, we can resolve issues quickly and collaboratively. This transparency helps avoid misunderstandings and ensures that the project remains aligned with the client’s vision, even when adjustments are necessary.

Why do you love online interior design?
I love online interior design because it makes great design accessible to more people, wherever they are. It provides flexibility and convenience, allowing clients to collaborate with me from anywhere in the world. Additionally, it encourages the creative use of digital tools to visualize spaces and make decisions effectively, which can speed up the process without losing the personal touch.
